ASW probe in 400 (02/28/08)
We put the ASW probe back into the 400. This should make some of you happy, and some of you sad, as versatility is gained at the expense of 1H sensitivity. Please let us know, where your preferences lie.
In the meantime:
HCX probe in 400 (03/20/07)
The inner insert of the 400 workhorse ASW probe is broken again and the probe is going out to be repaired.
We have installed the HCX probe in the 400 which means that:
Scheduler passwords reset (02/08/07)
The scheduler passwords have been reset.
The new passwords were sent to the nmr e-mail list (chemnmr-l).
If you did not get the new password, contact the facility staff.
Please change your password as soon as possible:
GC-MS down until Friday (12/9) (12/06/05)
We are moving the GC-MS to a different location in B-22 to make room for a new instrument which will be arriving shortly. During this time the instrument will not be available. We expect that the GC-MS will be back in service by Friday (12/9).
DBG back in 500 (12/06/05)
The DBG probe has been repaired and is now back in the 500. VT limits of the DBG are -80 to +150 C. Please remeber to load the correct shimmap if you used the LNC probe.
500 DBG broken, replacement limited to +100C! (11/10/05)
I am sorry to report that the VT dewar inside the 500 workhorse DBG probe broke last night which puts the probe out of service until further notice.
While we are working on getting the DBG repaired, the newly acquired LNC probe will be installed in the 500.
Please note: This probe is limited to +100C! Do NOT heat the probe above +100C or you will damage the gradient and RF coils.
The LNC is a 13C/15N detect 1H/19F decouple probe, which means that:
You must use load the correct gradient shimmap (LNC_LOAD_ME) or gradient shimming will just make things worse. See corkboard for instructions.
If something goes wrong with shimming, retrieve the default shim values by typing: rts('LNC_LOAD_ME') su
If you have any questions or run into problems with the probe, please let us know.
ARX training Wed 07/27 and Thu 07/28 (07/21/05)
You can sign up for the training here.
The ARX is our oldest instrument and sees limited use.
1H sensitivity is 50% of the Mercury's, but 13C sensitivity is comparable.
Samples have to be shimmed manually and should contain 0.5 ml solvent or more.
You can find more information on this spectrometer here.
Feel free to contact Ivan if you have any questions about the instrument or the training sessions.
Proposed changes to low field sign-up rules (07/21/05)
The demand for low field NMR time during peak hours increased considerably over the last few weeks.
In order to allow more people access during those hours we are planning to institute the following changes to the sign-up rules starting MONDAY 07/25:
No staff 07/22, maintenance times available for use (07/21/05)
Tony and Ivan will be out of town Friday, 07/22 to demo a high-resolution GC-MS instrument. If you need to reach us during this time, please call 255 0709.
This week only, we will be filling nitrogen on Thursday instead of the usual Friday morning times. Feel free to reserve the instruments for Friday morning.
600 magnet quenched! (06/26/05)
I am extremely disappointed to report that the 600 magnet quenched early Sunday morning. I will get Varian to re-energize the magnet as soon as possible, but the instrument will not be available for at least two months. In the meantime:
THE 600 IS OUT OF SERVICE UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE!
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

ARX 300 fixed (06/03/05)
The ARX 300 is fixed and ready for use.
If you experience any problems with the instrument, please let us know.
HCX probe in 400 (04/20/05)
The inner insert of the 400 workhorse ASW probe is broken again and the probe is going out to be repaired.
We have installed the HCX probe in the 400 which means that:
500 prints to printer by the workstations (03/21/05)
The HP 2200 printer attached to the 500 broke last Friday.
While we are working on a replacement, the 500 will print on the
HP 8100 printer located next to the workstations at the other end of the room.
The 500 uses the printer in HPGL mode, sounlike the workstationsyou won't be able to generate postscript files.
Sample spinning on the 500 (02/24/05)
The 500 is having intermittent spinning problems. We are trying to identify the source but so far have not been successful. It seems every time we think we fixed it, it rears its ugly head again. While we are working on the problem, please keep in mind that:
*** sample spinning is NOT essential for, and in some cases even detrimental to obtaining quality spectra! (see below) ***
If you have trouble spinning, simply turn off the spinner with the on/off button in the ACQI window or set the spin rate to 0 either by typing spin=0 or using the slider in the ACQI -> LOCK window.
Sample spinning helps lineshapes by canceling field inhomogeneities in the XY plane. In most cases the difference in lineshape is small, and only noticeable on sharp lines. In samples with naturally broad lines, such as paramagnetic samples or polymers, you will likely see no difference at all between spinning and non-spinning lineshapes. Spinning introduces time dependent variations in spectra and therefore 2D experiments should always be done non-spinnig.
HCX probe in 400 (02/16/05)
The inner insert of the 400 workhorse ASW probe is broken and the probe is going out to be repaired.
We have installed the HCX probe in the 400 which means that:
DBG probe in 500 (02/16/05)
I am glad to report that the DBG probe is back and seems to be working fine.
It will be in magnet starting today, which means that:
HCN probe in 500 (02/07/05)
We are shipping the DBG probe back to Varian today. The probe engineer promised
to start working on it as soon as it gets there, which should be sometime tomorrow. Barring any out-of-stock parts, he will get the DBG back to us as quickly as he can.
In the meantime we will put the HCN probe into the magnet, which means that:
Missing keys (02/07/05)
We are asking for your assitance in finding a missing a set of keys, which were last seen in the 500 room. The keys have a blue metal clip with three clips, a car key with black covering on the handle, and a silver identification tag with numbers from the Cornell campus police.
Please let me know, if you have seen them.
No VT on 500 (02/05/05)
The 500 DBG probe has serious temperature dependent tuning problems and has to go out for repairs. I am trying to arrange for a loaner probe or expedited processing, but I have not heard back from Varian, yet.
In the meantime to avoid further damage to the probe, preamp and amp,
*** ABSOLUTELY NO VT ALLOWED ON THE 500! ***
You may contiune to use it at 25 C.
ASW probe is back in the 400
10/20/04
The broadband autoswitchable (ASW) probe is back from repairs and has been reinstalled as the standard probe in the 400.
1H, 19F and 13C are available without any changes to the hardware.
31P requires changing the 1/4 wavelength cable.
Other nuclei require probe tuning, and available upon request.
You do not need to change anything. The same gradient map name now applies to the ASW probe.
To retrieve the default shims use:
rts('LOAD_ME') su
If you have any questions or run into problems with the probe, please let us know.

400 down until further notice
08/17/04
I am sad to report that the H/X amplifier of the Inova 400 is dead
rendering the spectrometer unusable.
I am trying to get a new amplifier in as quick as I can, but I am not sure when that will be.
I am sorry about the inconvenience, and hope to resolve the problem as soon as possible.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Reservation rules and guidelines:
07/09/04
Please keep the following in mind when making reservations:
1) Do NOT exceed the maximum time allowed per reservation
(m300: 30 min, i400: 60 min) by reserving consecutive time slots.
Exception: You may sign up for more time at the end of your slot
if the instrument is available at that time.
2) Avoid signing up for time periods ending late at night (say, 10 pm or later).
Nights are ideally suited for long acquisitions.
Please, be considerate to your fellow facility users,
and don't force them to be in the lab late at night
just to get a long experiment started.
Your cooperation is appreciated.

400 ASW broken - HCX back in magnet
03/16/04
The 400 ASW probe had to be sent off for repairs again. While the ASW is being repaired, the HCX_PFG probe will be installed.
This probe is excellent for 1H observation (better, in fact, than the DBG
probe on the 500), but not great for 13C and 31P (no better than the
300). 19F is not possible on the HCX probe.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to talk to us.
